The saying never goes wrong “Persistence is key to Success”. Yet we have another
example that through persistence, we can achieve success after 48 years. He is
Saleh Khalil Hijazin, a Jordanian man, didn’t stop his persistence because of his
age but proved age is just a number to pass 12 th grade after 6 attempts at 70 years.
Hijazin was born in the town of As-Simakiyah, which belongs to the Karak
Governorate in the Gulf region. He was in joy when the Ministry of Education
declared the results of the Tawjihi exams and came to know that he passed them.
Hijazin wrote his last attempt on June 24 th in the first session when Tawjihi exams
began amongst health assessments to block the spread of the Coronavirus.
He gave a push to his dream in the year 1973. He failed in that attempt but never
gave up and so wrote again in the year 1979 in the literary stream, but then again
failed. In the year 1981, he attempted again but then crashed. Although Hijazin didn’t
pass, his persistent nature made him not give up. So, he tried in the year 1990, but
that also failed. After 4 attempts, he didn’t want to give up, so this time Hijazin sat
with his son for the exam. But he again crashed while his son passed it. That’s when
he stopped his attempt at writing exam in the year 2003.
But he was desperate again to try, so he again wrote in 2021 in the science stream.
Hijazin was the only one from his family and brothers who attempted in the science
stream and achieved success in it after 48 years.
Hijazin specified now he has upgraded his level, and he is carried away to the next
level in scientific and academic level, and this was what he was aiming for in his life
as he has a passion for it. He also revealed that during the initial days he found,
maths was simple, but years later, with all the syllabus changes, it has come upto
200 pages textbook. Hijazin stated that despite the syllabus change; he didn’t go for
any tuition and got guidance from his children and self-study.
Hijazin started his work life after studying a course in the mechanics of large
locomotives, then worked on the Hijaz Railway. Next, he moved his work to Ma’an to
move on to Aqaba Governorate, later to the port and retired in 2010. Hijazin’s family
is big with five children, out of which he has three sons and two daughters, all are
graduates and throughout his studies supported and guided him to pass the 12 th
grade. Further, they are encouraging him to graduate from the community college for
two years and even do a post-graduation at this rate. He revealed he is desperate to
seek knowledge and so will never stop throughout his life.
Thus, Hijazin has proved Aisha Tyler’s words “Success is not the absence of failure;
it’s the persistence through failure”. Also, age is just a number if you have passion,
you will never rest till you attain it.
